It’s no secret that lower back pain is a global burden and impacts people a great deal. There is so much research out there that tries to find the best treatment for those struggling with Chronic Lower Back Pain (cLBP). In a recent Literature Review by Fernandez, Rodriquez, et.al., they found some interesting results after pooling together many of the research out there to help people manage and treat their lower back pain. Here is whhat they concluded:
General exercise has always been highly recommended to help people with cLBP, but the confusing part is WHAT exercise helps the most. The literature review compared 42 studies with each other to find an answer.
The conclusion was that although most exercise interventions had benefits for managing pain and disability in those with cLBP, the most beneficial programs were those that included:
- At least 1 to 2 sessions per week of Pilates or strength exercises;
- Sessions of less than 60 minutes of core-based, strength, or mind-body exercises; and
- Training programs from 3 to 9 weeks of Pilates and core-based exercises.
Before engaging in an exercise program, make sure to do a comprehensive individual assessment with an Exercise Clinician. After the assessment, they should discuss a shared tailored target and specific exercise approach for rehabilitation.
